Liane (pronounced Lee-Ann) Moriarty is an Australian author known for her contemporary fiction novels. Born in November 1966, she began her writing career by penning three fantasy novels for children, which were well-received. However, it was her adult fiction that catapulted her to international fame, with five of her novels becoming bestsellers.

Early Life

Liane Moriarty was the firstborn child in her family, and her mother diligently documented her early years in a diary. As the family grew to include four more girls and one boy, Liane became the sole recipient of these chronicles. According to the family chronicle, she smiled at her father a few hours after birth, and her first word was 'boo'. Her love for reading was so immense that her friends would hide their books before inviting her over. Liane received her first writing fee as a child when her father encouraged her to write something for him and paid her a dollar as an advance. She wrote a three-part epic titled "The Secret of Dead Man's Island" in response.

Early Career

Despite her early foray into writing, Liane and her family considered literature more as a hobby. After completing school, she pursued a career in advertising and marketing.
