Patricia Carroll Daniels, known as Patricia Cornwell, is an American writer born on June 9, 1956. She is renowned for her crime fiction series featuring the medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.
Early Life
Born in Miami, Florida, Cornwell grew up with her father, Sam Daniels, a prominent lawyer, and her mother, Marilyn. She had a distant relationship with her father, who passed away in 1961. After his death, her mother was hospitalized with depression, and Cornwell and her siblings were placed in foster care.
Education and Career
Cornwell briefly attended King College in Bristol before transferring to Davidson College, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English. In 1979, she became a reporter at 'The Charlotte Observer,' later covering crime. In 1983, she published her first book, a biography of family friend Ruth Bell Graham.
Forensic Science and Writing
In 1984, Cornwell joined the Virginia Department of Chief Medical Examiner as a technical writer and computer analyst. She also volunteered with the Richmond Police Department. Her early writing attempts were rejected, but her first Kay Scarpetta novel, 'Postmortem,' was accepted for publication in 1990.
The Scarpetta Series
The Scarpetta series revolutionized the crime fiction genre with its focus on forensic science. Cornwell's stories emphasize the role of experts in analyzing physical evidence to solve murders. Beyond the Scarpetta series, Cornwell has written three pseudonymous police procedurals featuring Andy Brazil and Judy Hammer. She has also extensively researched the case of Jack the Ripper and published 'Portrait of a Killer—Jack the Ripper: Case Closed,' arguing that the artist Walter Sickert was the perpetrator.
Personal Life
Cornwell has been married twice, first to a man and later to Staci Ann Gruber in 2005. She is currently married to Gruber, a Harvard University employee.
