Early Life and Education
Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr. was born in New York City in October 1958 to a multinational family. His mother, Grace Atkinson, was English, while his father, Viggo Mortensen, was Danish. Viggo's childhood was marked by frequent moves, as his parents initially settled in South America, then Denmark, and finally Argentina. Due to his upbringing, Viggo became fluent in multiple languages, including English, Danish, Spanish, French, Swedish, and Norwegian.
The Road to Acting
In 1976, his parents divorced, and Viggo and his siblings relocated with their mother to New York City, where he completed his secondary education. He later graduated from St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Politics. After graduating, Viggo embarked on a journey of self-discovery, living in Spain and Denmark and working odd jobs. In 1982, he returned to the United States and decided to pursue acting.
Film Debut and Breakout Role
Mortensen made his film debut at the age of 26 with a small role in "Witness." His career gained momentum in the mid-1990s with supporting roles in popular films such as "Carlito's Way," "The Indian Runner," "The Prophecy," and "Perfect Murder." In these films, he showcased his growing acting prowess, which caught the attention of Hollywood directors.
The latter half of the 1990s witnessed Viggo's transition into romantic leads in films like "G.I. Jane" and "The Portrait of a Lady." The success of these films paved the way for his meteoric rise to stardom. Remakes of Alfred Hitchcock classics "Psycho" and "Perfect Murder" further solidified Mortensen's status as a rising star.
The 'Lord of the Rings' Saga
Viggo's talent truly shone through in the iconic fantasy epic "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He played Aragorn, a Ranger who falls in love with an Elven princess. Aragorn's storyline intertwines with the quest to destroy the One Ring, a powerful artifact that threatens to enslave Middle-earth. Mortensen's performance was universally praised, earning him immense popularity. Despite not winning any individual awards for his role, the cast of "The Lord of the Rings" was collectively recognized as the Best Ensemble Cast in a Theatrical Motion Picture for each of the three films.
Collaboration with David Cronenberg
Mortensen's collaboration with acclaimed director David Cronenberg in "A History of Violence" brought him further critical acclaim. His portrayal of a Russian mobster in the 2007 film "Eastern Promises" was considered one of his strongest performances. To prepare for the role, Mortensen traveled to Russia incognito and spent two months immersing himself in the culture.
