Biography of Jimmy Savile

English DJ and television presenter, Jimmy Savile, was best known as the host of the show 'Jim'll Fix It' and as the first and last presenter of the long-running BBC music chart show 'Top of the Pops'. He was also actively involved in charity work.

Early Life

James Savile was born in Leeds, England. He was the youngest of seven children born to Vincent Joseph Marie Savile and Agnes Monica. At the age of five months, Savile nearly died from pneumonia, but fortunately, he recovered. During World War II, Savile worked in the coal mines of West Yorkshire. He suffered a serious back injury during a mining accident, which took a long time to recover from.

DJ Career

In the early 1940s, Savile began his career as a DJ. He is considered one of the first DJs in the world. Some claim that he was the first to use two turntables and one microphone in his musical performances, although double turntables were illustrated in BBC manuals as early as 1929. Music played an important role in Savile's life, but he also had time for other activities. He was a semi-professional athlete, participating in cycling tournaments, marathons, and wrestling.

In 1958, Savile started working as a DJ on Radio Luxembourg. He later moved to BBC, where he hosted the renamed show 'Top of the Pops'. Savile joined BBC Radio 1 in 1968, hosting shows such as 'Savile's Travels' and 'Speakeasy'. His most famous radio show on Radio 1 was 'Jimmy Savile's Old Record Club', which played the best hits from previous years and pioneered playing old chart shows from the archives.

In 1987, after 19 years at Radio 1, Savile left the station. From March 1989, he worked with various British radio stations, hosting shows similar to those on Radio 1. In 1994, comedian Chris Morris recorded a fake obituary for Savile on BBC Radio 1, which caused controversy. Savile considered suing Morris for the prank.

Television Career

Savile made his television debut in 1960 with the show 'Young at Heart'. On January 1, 1964, he presented the first television version of his radio chart show 'Top of the Pops'. Savile also hosted the final episode of the show 42 years later, on July 30, 2006. He later returned to television with the show 'Jim'll Fix It', which aired from 1975 to 1994. In 2007, he presented 'Jim'll Fix It Strikes Again', which included a mix of classic and new episodes.

Personal Life and Death

Savile never married and lived in his mother's apartment even after her death. He continued to maintain her bedroom and wardrobe, only sending his clothes for dry cleaning once a year. He mentioned in his autobiography that he had many close relationships with women, but never disclosed any specific partner.

Savile passed away on October 29, 2011, just two days before his 85th birthday. He died from pneumonia, which he had been hospitalized for shortly before his death.
